Bathroom Decor

We are slowly getting our place decorated and I am loving it. It is so fun to have a place of our own to design however we so desire. The only downside is that it is taking longer than expected because I have just too many ideas! One of the first rooms to be complete(ish) is the bathroom. It was an easy place to start because if I didn’t like it, well, it’s just the bathroom right?

The color scheme came together a little haphazardly. I wanted some bright colors to offset the black and white fixtures and tiling and I had this awesome yellow piece from my old place (picture below). I decided to use the yellow and run with it. I chose red as the other accent color because I am a huge USC fan  I love the bold use of colors and thought they went well together. Here are a few shots of the final(ish) result.

In case you’re curious, I get a lot of my decorations from Joss and Main and also from Home Goods. Both are good spots to get fun home décor without breaking the bank.I found the below print on Etsy, it reads:  “Pirates wash their hands and say their prayers because germs and Jesus are everywhere”. Love it, and appropriately placed next to the sink!

I used canvases and acrylic paint  from Michael’s to get fill up the rest of the wall space with some DIY artwork.  You can read all about how to make the colorful blockade design here.

I also did a grouping of black framed art on another wall. I like that all the frames are different shapes and sizes, but the black borders give them consistency, along with the mirror.

The top left photo is a digital comic rendering Steve had made of us, the California print is from Etsy, I took the tulip photo, and the map is a pencil drawing of New Orleans where Steve went to college.

I had so much fun decorating, but it’s even more fun to be complete! On to the next room…

52 Projects: Audio Wave Form Art

By |March 7th, 2013|52 Projects, Art, crafts, DIY, Us, VIP|

Steve is quite the audio buff and has been getting really into producing music of late. He is always fiddling around with audio equipment covered with knobs and switches, making cool sounds.  This past weekend he was working on said sounds and I was crafting, playing around with buttons on a black canvas. I was looking at the cool wave forms from his music and got the idea to use the designs to make some art. I had Steve record himself saying the word “love” and took a screen shot of the wave form of his voice- pictured below.

I traced the waveform from my computer screen onto a piece of paper. Printing is a more accurate/aesthetically pleasing way to do this  but I was inpatient and didn’t want to use up my dwindling black ink- so good old paper and pencil won out.

Wave Form Trace

Clearly I wasn’t going for accuracy, just an idea of the outline that I could use as a guide to laying out the buttons. Then it was just a matter of placing all of the buttons in the pattern and in an order I liked and gluing them on. It proved challenging to be accurate on the tight curves because I had a small canvas and relatively large buttons to work with. Even though it’s far from a perfect replica, I love the way it turned out, and think it’s special to be able to see the sound of love.

Here are some things that are making me happy right now.  Hope they make you smile too :)

The first four pictures I found at various places on the internet, the last one is a picture of the gorgeous roses from the boy on Valentine’s Day.
