Weekend Round Up: Coachella Edition

Coachella sunset ferris wheel

Music, friends, sunshine, dancing… it’s pretty hard not to love Coachella- and this year was no exception. I took a half day off work on Friday and drove out to La Quinta where my friend Lo has a house just a few miles from the Empire Polo Field (aka Coachella land). There were 8 of us this year, some of us seasoned vets, and some first-timers. It was so fun to catch up with everybody.  Most days we hung out by the pool in the morning and left around 330 for the festival. As much as I would love be there at 11am every day, 13 hours in the heat is just too much for my old bones!

Coachella2013-2

The music was (obviously) awesome. Everyone always asks what my favorite band was- and that’s just an unfair question! Part of the allure of Coachella is that you see such a variety of music genres and that makes it hard to compare. So no, I won’t pick a favorite, but here are some highlights:

Throwbacks: Jurassic 5,  Postal Service, and Wu Tang (pictured below)

Coachella2013-8

Dance Beats: Major Lazer, Kill the Noise (pictured below) and Pretty Lights

Coachella2013-5

Alt/Indie et.al: The Lumineers, Passion Pit, and James Blake

There were a lot of other sets I enjoyed but unlike in previous years, no single performance blew me away above and beyond the others.  What did blow me away was the wind. Sunday a huge windstorm came in and the temperature suddenly dropped from the 90’s to the low 50’s and sand and dust filled the air. It was gross! I didn’t bring a sweater (rookie move, I know) and had to buy one there. Steve was sweet enough to wait in the long store line with me, surrounded by other shivering girls also ready to drop $50 on an ugly hoodie to survive the chill. Whatever- totally worth it! We drove home late Sunday night and let me tell you Monday was rough! But I made it to work on time and with the help of multiple starbucks trips made it through the day.

A Coachella Beginner’s Guide

By |April 11th, 2013|accessories, clothes, Favorites, travel, weekend round up|

Oh hey Coachella weekend, when did you get here? One of my favorite weekends of the year is upon us- and I couldn’t be more excited. I have a few friends who are going for their first time and  all of them had similar questions. I figured it might be useful to throw together a little “Beginners Guide” to Coachella 2013.

For you first timers out there, here are a couple of tips! For you Vets- feel free to comment with your own tips!

What to wear

Here is a repost of last years Coachella basics-

Wear something comfortable for sitting on the grass, dancing and lots of walking. Also keep in mind its hot during the day but cools down a lot at night. A light sweater may seem outrageous when you are heading into the concert, but you will be thankful for it when you are leaving! Sunscreen/sunglasses are a must.

What to see

What to do

Hydrate! There are water fill stations available so bring a bottle to refill, or buy one there. You can also turn in ten empty plastic bottles for a fresh cold one.

Plan. There are so many great acts to see that if you don’t plan your day out you may miss something. The Coachella app (free) is great for this.  If two performances overlap don’t panic, you can do both! It’s also a good idea to plan on a meeting spot. Cell phones die, reception is poor, and inevitable someone gets separated from the group. The Ferris wheel is always a good meeting point- kind of hard to miss.

Wander. I know I just said to plan out your day, but I also highly encourage “wandering” around and listening to random acts. Some of my favorite shows were ones that I stopped by in between those I had planned. It’s a great opportunity to check out some new music and see what you think.

ENJOY. This is the easy and most important part!
